Doctor Who: 5 Unfairly Forgotten NuWho Stories

1. The God Complex

Doctor Who 42 Tenth Doctor
BBC

'The God Complex' finds the TARDIS trio trapped in a labyrinthine prison decked out like a naff 80's hotel. Each room contains their worst fears and the halls are stalked by a Minotaur which scares people into worshipping it before feeding on their faith. Our heroes must find a way out before their terror turns them into tuck. All the while, the Doctor must confront the danger of Amy's blind faith in him.

Another Toby Whithouse entry, this story had all the trappings of an instant classic. A mythical monster reimagined with a sci-fi twist, a creepy setting, brilliant direction and a subtext so rich it could wear a monocle. Not to mention a guest appearance by comedy legend and talent show judge David Walliams. 'The God Complex' explores faith, religion and the complexity of fear in a tense, exciting story that also includes some huge character growth for the main cast. Plus the Minotaur, which you see only glimpses of until the end, is some of Millennium FX's best work. Broadcast at the tail end of Series 6, also known as the year of the dangling plot threads, it's a fantastic story but seldom makes it into anyone's Top 10 lists.

Why it's forgotten: As with 'The Almost People', a few particularly intriguing aspects of the story distracted fans from the episode itself. What the Doctor sees in Room 11 became the subject of exhaustive speculation... until Steven Moffat ruined the mystery a couple of years later. Plus, the abrupt departure of Amy and Rory as full-time TARDIS inhabitants also meant people focused more on that brief coda than the 44 minutes that had preceded it.
