Doctor Who: 50 Greatest Ever Stories

1. The Caves Of Androzani (Fifth Doctor)

The Caves of Androzani (1)

You show me someone who doesn't like The Caves Of Androzani, and I'll you someone who knows nothing about Doctor Who. This story has it all. Let's recap, shall we? The story follows the Doctor and his companion Peri Brown, having been accidentally poisoned inside a cave on Androzani Minor. All while suffering from the pain of the poison and their bodies slowly weakening, they are also caught in the middle of a war between a mining corporation and Sharaz Jek, a masked man hiding out in the bottom of the caves. Peri is eventually kidnapped by Sharaz Jek (leading to a wonderful homage to the Phantom of the Opera), while the Doctor is taken away on a ship owned by the mining company. Finally in the final episode of the serial, as the Doctor is weakened to the point he can barely walk, he overtakes the ship and crash lands it on the planet so he can return to the caves, find Peri, and give her the antidote for the poison. This story was the swan song for Peter Davison as the fifth Doctor, ending with him realizing there is only enough antidote for one of them. After giving it to her, he waits to see what will happen to him, unsure of whether he can regenerate, or if it's too late for him already... So what do you think? Any of these stories overrated? Any good ones we've missed? Sound off in the comments below!
