Doctor Who: 8 Reasons Why River Song HAS To Come Back!
5. She Needs A Spinoff!
While on the subject of spinoffs, surely River Song is deserving of one! Just picture, the idea of a companion adopting the investigative nature of the Doctor like The Sarah Jane Adventures, combined with the more adult themes and dialogue of Torchwood. Et voilà, we have the perfect BBC Three spinoff!
Now, of course, Big Finish have done a fantastic job of keeping the adventures of River Song alive through audio dramas and have even had the opportunity to introduce the character to previous incarnations, which just wouldn’t be possible in an on screen capacity. The popularity of The Diary of River Song series alone highlights the desire fans have to see more of this dynamic character. But there is only so much an audio adventure can achieve before the audience is desperate to see these scenes unfold before their eyes.
The library of Big Finish stories and The Ruby’s Curse novel, written by Alex Kingston herself, provide ample starting points for potential spinoff episodes and we are absolutely ready for it! It’s main base could be River’s Stormcage cell, various incarnations of the Doctor can make cameo appearances, previous companions can pop up along the way… the possibilities are endless! She literally has a whole diary full of adventures that we’ve barely scratched the surfaced on!
And with the recent return of BBC Three to television and the king of Doctor Who spinoffs RTD making his comeback as showrunner, now seems like the most fitting and appropriate time to introduce that highly anticipated River Song spinoff series!
