Doctor Who: 9 Great Third Doctor Stories

6. The Three Doctors (Story 065, 1973)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uEnKv2s4378 While the later story, €œThe Five Doctors€ has been memorably referred to €œThree-and-a-half Doctors and a bloke in a wig,€ this one could perhaps be called €œTwo Doctors and a chap on TV€. On paper the concept of bringing together the first three Doctors and having them work together to stop the evil Omega from destroying the universe sounds great! In practice, due to William Hartnell€™s ill health, it mostly involved the Second and Third Doctor running around doing things while the First Doctor kibitzed at them from a TV screen (€œSo you€™re my two successors? A dandy and a clown?€). But that said, it remains the best of the multi-Doctor stories. The chemistry between Troughton and Pertwee is just excellent, and watching the Brigadier trying to wrap his mind around the notion that the entirety of UNIT HQ was transported to another universe (€œNonsense, it€™s just Brighton or something.€), is sheer delight, as is Sergeant Benton's comparatively casual introduction to the inside of the TARDIS. The story is dragged down a tad by the fact that the Second Doctor's recorder is used to save the day, but otherwise this is a grand adventure!
