Doctor Who: 9 Things You Didn't Realise About Series 1 Of NuWho
7. Rose Went Missing For A Whole Year
Rose Tyler's adrenaline filled encounter with the Autons in the first episode of NuWho meant that she didn't give the opportunity to step aboard the TARDIS - and subsequently abandon her mum and boyfriend - a second thought. She always knew, however, that she'd have to return home and face the music at some point. In her defence, she didn't realise that the Doctor would get the coordinates slightly wrong and actually take her back a whole year after she'd first left. For a Time Lord, time isn't always his speciality. This mishap was one of NuWho's first examples of how timey-wimey a relationship with the Doctor can be. In fact, it was timey-wimey before timey-wimey was even a word. It proved to have damaging consequences for Rose's loved ones, especially her long suffering boyfriend Mickey who had become a recluse after being accused of her murder. It would also turn out to have a long lasting effect on the timeline of the series, too, which is far more important. Although Rose first met the Ninth Doctor in March 2005 (although as viewers have since been told, their actual initial encounter took place a couple of months earlier, on New Year's Day), her return to Earth was in 2006 which means that the subsequent Earth-based stories all took place a year after their broadcast date. The Christmas Invasion, broadcast in 2005, was set at Christmas 2006 and so on, so forth. Things have caught up now, owing to the show's 'gap year' in 2009 plus the fact that the 2008 Christmas Special, The Next Doctor, was set in the past. By the time Doctor Who returned to our screens under the helm of Steven Moffat, the Doctor - now in his eleventh incarnation - was in 2010 with the rest of us. It would prove to be a pretty significant year, too, as 26th June 2010 marks the day on which the TARDIS exploded and subsequently destroyed the entire universe. Way to overshadow Amy and Rory's wedding, man.
