How refreshing it was to be introduced to a new companion in Bill Potts without an overly complex unsolved mystery air about her. Bill was a normal person with everyday aspirations and had your typical thoughts and feelings.

She served chips; yet wanted to better herself by attending the Doctor's lectures. She had a crush on a beautiful girl called Heather, but like many relationships, it wasn't exactly a straightforward romance. Bill was someone who we could all relate to as we've experienced all of that on some level, although having your crush chase you via shapeshifting fluid is perhaps stretching it.

What a shame that we had to wait until Capaldi's third and final series for this Doctor-new companion dynamic because he and Pearl Mackie are an engaging pair.

It's a joy to watch Bill's "bigger on the inside" reaction (eventually) and to the overall workings of the TARDIS: naturally awestruck but then it all sinks in (Bill looks down at a sink ironically enough) as she gets her head around the impossibility of it all. How appropriate that Bill has a comic book WOW! on her jacket. Equally joyful is seeing Capaldi get his moment to show off the really posh kitchen to somebody new.

The plot is pretty forgettable but this is more about concentrating on Bill and Nardole’s character development, laying the foundations for Capaldi's best series and enjoying his exuberantly eccentric performance, like all the best university professors.

The name's Colbourn, James - yeah, doesn't quite have the same ring to it.
