Doctor Who: All 40 Steven Moffat Episodes Ranked From Worst To Best
6. The Girl In The Fireplace
A hauntingly beautiful tale which is accompanied by an enchantingly bittersweet score from Murray Gold.
Back in 2010, Moffat said that "There will never be enough money to make Doctor Who... We could spend Avatar's budget and still ask for more, because it's a show that's set in every point in history and every place in the universe... A lot of the most iconic things about Doctor Who are a direct consequence of financial shortcomings... Budget cuts are tough: I don't like them, but they force you to be creative."
The "magic door" that allows the Doctor to literally take turns between a 51st century starship and 18th century France is a great example of one of the iconic things about the show, and is a hallmark of the outstanding production team. And when the Doctor spins around to be greeted with an adult and flirtatious Reinette, this becomes an absorbing and moving love story.
David Tennant and Sophia Myles make for a beautiful and captivating pair that epitomises the very best of sizzling onscreen chemistry. No wonder they dated in real life for a while.
Even though this means Rose takes a backseat in this story, it's still interesting seeing her conflicting emotions towards Reinette of jealously and genuine concern for her well-being. Moreover, given how Reinette was able to walk amongst the Doctor's memories, this is arguably the closest and most intimate relationship the Tenth Doctor experienced (dancing aside).
There's sure to be plenty of us who get teary-eyed every time we watch that scene of him reading Reinette's heartbreaking letter.
