Doctor Who: All 40 Steven Moffat Episodes Ranked From Worst To Best
32. Twice Upon A Time
On the one hand, some would say after the bombastic regeneration episodes of the Tenth and Eleventh Doctors, it was a welcome change to have a more introspective and overall ethereal swan song for Peter Capaldi's incarnation.
But on the other, it feels as though Moffat has played it too safe with this one; as though he's completely abandoned his divisive penchant for daring complexity in favour of what is essentially a non-event. Even the Doctor was flummoxed at there being no evil plan.
Nevertheless, there are some delightful and affecting parts to this story. Capaldi's sharp and witty dialogue with David Bradley's First Doctor shows Moffat at his best. Bradley embodies the spirit of William Hartnell whilst still being able to distinguish himself at the same time. And the Twelfth Doctor's final act of kindness in shifting the Captain's timeline forward to the start of the Christmas truce is a priceless leaving present.
However given Moffat has brought some momentous story arcs full circle, it was therefore disappointing that the rumours of Capaldiās final story, which focuses on when he and the First Doctor team up for one last hurrah to help save Gallifrey, didn't materialise.
