It really can come as no shock that the best Doctor Who episode written by Chibnall also happened to feature David Tennant. Of course it's no coincidence, as Tennant could bring pathos and energy to the latest Sharknado film.

The episode is a rollicking adventure from start to finish, with any nonsensical moments turned into fun ones by the brilliant Scottish actor. Moments that other actors would make seem silly, like the Sun being a living being, or a pub quiz that has life or death ramifications, are brought to life effortlessly here by one of the great actors of our time.

To be fair to Chibnall, the premise is a ripper, with an always ominous alien presence picking off the crew of a spaceship one by one. The TARDIS is out of the equation early on, which makes the race against time to reboot the engines and stop the alien threat all the more ominous, keeping the viewer on edge from start to finish.

Massive kudos must go to Chibnall for bringing Martha Jones to life, a character who had been bogged down with scripts that paid too much credit to her predecessor. It's the first time the two travellers in time felt like a genuine combo, with Martha actually essential in helping The Doctor save the day. The acting may be great to boost the episode's reception, but the script is evidence that Chibnall definitely has skills as a screenwriter.
