It was all change for Doctor Who in 2010. For the first time in the revival's history, the showrunner would be stepping down alongside their Doctor and handing the reigns to someone new. New boss Steven Moffat's choice for the Doctor baffled many at first.

A total unknown actor, who would be the youngest ever to play the role at just 26? Could it work?

As with pretty much every other casting choice in the new series, it did. Matt Smith's popularity as the Doctor arguably dwarfed Tennant's overseas for a while. One episode after the fiftieth anniversary special, The Day of the Doctor, saw Doctor Who achieve some of its highest ratings ever, Smith decided to hang up the bowtie for good.

Since leaving the TARDIS, he's been seen in a wide variety of media. He played the physical embodiment of long-running villain Skynet in Terminator: Genisys and attracted Emmy attention for his role as Prince Phillip in the smash-hit Netflix series The Crown.

Several exciting projects appear to be in the works for Smith, as well. He is set to join Sony's Spider-Man universe in Morbius this year and will also be featured in HBO's Game of Thrones prequel, House of the Dragon.
