Doctor Who Companions: Tegan Jovanka

tegandoctorfrontios Tegan may have been brutally honest, and determined, but she also was able to have great style. The stewardess uniform, not so much. The tube top with white shorts was quite nice, especially with her pixie cut. Though it was obviously uncomfortable for many reasons. But I personally like her leather skirt outfit with a red, black and white top. It is probably her most stylish outfits of the era, and it is one of the most recognizable of the companion's costumes in Doctor Who. Tegan was fortunate to not have suffered as badly with costuming as later companions would, due to John Nathan-Turner, who felt he should decide what the young ladies at the time would be wearing. The audio adventures featuring the Fifth Doctor were definitely different without Tegan. Sometimes they would mention her, but that was all. The stories just weren't the same. That happens when there is a certain companion that has been in the TARDIS the longest for a particular era, and then the actor or actress moves on to do other things. There was however a huge void for almost ten years without Tegan, and her presence was missed terribly. So when it was announced Janet Fielding decided to return after all these years to portray Tegan, there were more ecstatic fans than not. Just like the Sixth Doctor and Mel, the writers have been able to write Tegan much better on the audios as well. She does still get a bit sarcastic, but that's another thing people confuse as to being miserable. Sarcasm can be used in a sense of humor, where misery is just not happy all the time. There are plenty of stories where Tegan has flashed a toothy white smile, and has even laughed. Tegan has always been a role model for me. The determination, willing to fight for her friends, protective, this could all be placed higher, and more important than what people say about her being too whiny. Whiny is not in Tegan's blood, it's honesty and a tendency to be high-strung. People like to take these and turn it into something bad. I always found the differences in personalities makes the friendships interesting. I found Nyssa too boring simply because she was far too like the Doctor with scientific knowledge, and she came across as a know-it-all in her first season in the TARDIS. It seemed everyone started off a bit rocky in their first season in Doctor Who, as both Janet and Sarah seemed more relaxed with their roles by the second season.

I am a sales associate by day, and 3D artist and writer at night. I have a passion for Doctor Who, especially the Fifth Doctor era. I go to conventions when I have the funds, and I also make costumes on my spare time.
