Doctor Who: Every Doctor Ranked From Worst To Best

6. The Twelfth Doctor (Peter Capaldi)

Peter Capaldi caused a bit of a stir when he emerged as the Twelfth Doctor back in 2013. He had already appeared in Doctor Who in the role of Caecilius, as well as appearing in the spinoff series Torchwood as John Frobisher.

Why, then, was this recognisable face chosen to play the next incarnation of the Doctor?

As it turns out, it didn't really matter. Yes, it was explained. But more importantly, Capaldi was an instant, quite brilliant change from Matt Smith's Eleventh Doctor. The eighth series of the revival displayed a much darker side of the Time Lord, this time displaying colder attitudes towards the humans in his orbit. Only Clara seemed safe, yet even that came with caveats!

The ninth series of the show, while suffering from a mishandled plot about the Hybrid, stands as one of the strongest since the show returned. Capaldi showed huge growth in the character, allowing audiences to truly root for him, so by the time his regeneration arc rolled around in Twice Upon A Time, tears were shedding for the Twelfth Doctor.

A longtime fan of the show, Capaldi was one of the best-poised to take over the keys to the TARDIS. He also had one of the best introductions of them all - those attack eyebrows left many theatre-goers whooping in their seats.
