Doctor Who: Every Master Ranked Worst To Best

2. Michelle Gomez

Doctor Who The Master
BBC Studios

Missy was a Master like none other.

Steven Moffat was a cereal trickster, which meant that we spent the entirety of a series not knowing the true identity of this perturbed female character. The eventual expression on Peter Capaldi's face during the reveal is priceless.

It wasn't just the male to female transition that made this Master special. Michelle Gomez took the character and made it her own in a way that nobody else could. In equal bouts, she took the Master's wit, savagery, and lack of sanity to whole new depths. Her costume alone was terrifically wild. It was everything we knew about the character, but different again.

Gomez's three-dimensional rendition even allowed for a 'path to redemption' storyline which lasted a whole series, whereby we saw her beginning to struggle against the villainous side of her personality. It was the first time that The Master had a real in-depth character arc with no straight lines, and it was one which Gomez pulled off with effortless flair.

Missy was therefore, unique, iconic, and one of the biggest breaths of fresh air in the character's history.
