Doctor Who: EVERY NuWho Villain And Monster Ranked Worst To Best

5. The Midnight Entity

Psychological horrors are the scariest. Whether that's a good or bad thing depends on how much you watch through your fingers. Or you just steer clear altogether and head for the sanctuary of Disney (mostly; the death of Mufasa anyone?).

Series 4's Midnight taps into all the usual mindf**ks associated with this ghastly genre. From Mechanic Claude's sudden panic when spotting something dark running towards the shuttle - yep, we've all paused and scanned every single inch of that segment - to the knocking from outside reverberating around the Doctor and the other passengers. After a few more loud knock knocks to terrify everyone, the entity goes crash-bang-wallop on the shuttle - killing poor Driver Joe and Claude in the process - and then moves on to the most sinister stage: possession.

The entity naturally targets and possesses the most frightened person, Sky Silvestry, and proceeds to petrify everyone by copying, then synchronising, to what they're all saying. Combined with Sky's transfixing blue eyes and knowing grin, she looks and sounds positively demonic.

With everyone retreating to the back of the shuttle, the entity has them exactly where it wants them, and successfully schemes to divide and conquer until it eventually steals the cleverest voice (not Biff Cane) with a look of scary satisfaction, and then manipulates some of the others into murdering the Doctor.

So, that'll be a one star Tripadvisor rating for Crusader Tours then, but a positive mention for the Hostess who saved the Doctor's life.

The name's Colbourn, James - yeah, doesn't quite have the same ring to it.
