Doctor Who: EVERY NuWho Villain And Monster Ranked Worst To Best
2. Weeping Angels
Steven Moffat said that he "nailed something really well when I wrote Blink". There are so many eye-catching elements that made this one of the greatest episodes ever, and one of those elements Moffat nailed perfectly was the monster of that seminal week in June 2007: the Weeping Angels.
Voted as the scariest Doctor Who monster in a Radio Times poll - by over 20 per cent to the runner-up Daleks (don't tell them that!) - it shows how iconic the quantum-locked lonely assassins are when a certain word of phrase instantly reminds you of them - "don't blink", much like "exterminate" with the Daleks. In fact, the Weeping Angels are so popular they've even got their own clothing line that includes "The Angels Have The Phone Box" range.
Although the Tenth Doctor said the Angels are “the only psychopaths in the universe to kill you nicely” - *cough cough* Angel Bob - their impact is acutely devastating, as shown in the aftermath of Amy and Rory's heartbreaking departure in The Angels Take Manhattan: from the bittersweet letter sent by Rory to his father Brian, to the Doctor's melancholy in The Snowmen, imagine watching a loved one or your closest friend suddenly disappear right in front of you in the blink of an eye, then discovering they've already lived out there days in the past. Though that person lets you know they lived a happy and fulfilling life, you’ll always be wondering what might have been.
In keeping with the spookiness of the Weeping Angels, Moffat wanted to show his son the "original weeping angel" that he spotted - and inspired him - in a chained up graveyard in Dorset several years beforehand... but it was no longer there.
