Doctor Who: Every Penultimate Cliffhanger Episode Ranked From Worst To Best

1. The Almost People

Let's be clear on this! History tells that this was actually a mid-season cliffhanger. But when series 6 was televised back in 2011, it was split into two parts with a gap of almost three months. So the follow-up episode, A Good Man Goes to War, was by all rights a season finale, making The Almost People a legitimate penultimate cliffhanger of jaw-dropping magnitude.

For virtually the whole season, Amy Pond had been a flesh copy. The Doctor knew it. He just didn't tell us. For two whole episodes he had been traipsing around a planet supposedly putting to rights the politics of mistreated flesh clones, whereas he was actually initiating the first stages of his Amy Pond-rescue plan.

The closing moments of zapping the bogus flesh-Amy were tense, poignant and completely unexpected. Not only was it a brutally clever twist, but it also set the Doctor's wisdom to a whole new level. His resolve and determination to liberate his abducted companion was goosebump material and re-affirmed his character to be the godlike entity which we could all sometimes do with in our lives. It also set the scene for A Good Man Goes to War, which was one of the biggest rollercoaster episodes in Doctor Who history.

Which penultimate cliffhanger episode do you think is the best? Let us know down in the comments.
