Doctor Who: Every Penultimate Cliffhanger Episode Ranked From Worst To Best

3. Heaven Sent

Dr Who Capaldi
BBC Studios

On more than one occasion, Steven Moffat showed himself to be the master of trickery, and none more so than in the seemingly endless puzzle box that was Heaven Sent. Trapped in a tower with no escape and chased by a hooded creature looking for the truth, there seemed no resolve to the Doctor's plight. It was only in the final stages that we realise how the Doctor had been one step ahead of the game and himself in a mind-aching, four billion year long, scheme to punch through a really hard wall...

And all to bring his companion back from the dead.

Not only was it an insanely clever twist, but it also showed the infallible resolve of Peter Capaldi's Doctor. If nothing else, it served as a lesson to us humans about perseverance. The 12th Doctor setting foot on Gallifrey soil with a personal grudge was also a fantastic moment. And though the follow-up, Hell Bent, was a little bit muddled, there is no denying the memorable impact Heaven Sent had on audiences.
