Doctor Who Flux: The Halloween Apocalypse Review - 6 Ups & 3 Downs

1. Glorious Flux Destruction!

"The Halloween Apocalypse" certainly lived up to its title, didn't it?

The level of carnage on display here was absolutely crazy, with the Flux obliterating planets like they were made out of paper and sticky tape. The special effects were top-notch too, and these CGI-heavy moments all had a very cinematic feel to them.

We rarely see destruction on this scale in Doctor Who, and it really does feel like the universe might actually be doomed. The Doctor seemed totally helpless at the end there, and it's always good to see the character face a challenge that completely stumps them.

If we have one gripe with the Flux, it's that it feels a bit... uninspired? It's a big dark cloud melting planets. We've seen similar ideas in countless other movies and TV shows, so to build the entire series around this concept seems a bit odd.

On the plus side, it's still early days, and we're bound to learn more about the origins and abilities of this event as the series progresses. Hell, did the Doctor just give it time-travelling powers by shooting the TARDIS vortex at it? A development like that would give the Flux some much-needed texture.

Anyway, that's it for the ups. Onto the downs!

Danny has been with WhatCulture for almost nine years, and is currently Doctor Who Editor and WhoCulture Channel Manager, overseeing all of WhatCulture's Whoniverse coverage. He has been writing and video editing for 10+ years, and first got a taste for content creation after making his own Doctor Who trailers and uploading them to YouTube (they're admittedly a bit rusty by today's standards). If you need someone to recite every Doctor Who episode in order or to tell you about the making of 1988's Remembrance of the Daleks, Danny is the person to ask.
