Doctor Who: Legend Of The Sea Devils Review - 6 Ups & 7 Downs

11. UP - A Fun Mystery

Legend of the sea devils
BBC

For a show about time travel, it’s rare that Doctor Who utilises it’s premise to explain and explore real-life mysteries in recent years. Whilst the shipwreck of the Flor de la Mar isn’t a particularly well-known historical event (unless you’re Dan), it’s great to see the show playing with something like this, and with a history so steeped in mystique and legends, a pirate story is the best place for this.

Of course, being the owner of a time machine, finding the location of the treasure in the modern day is an easy job for The Doctor, who simply jumps to the same co-ordinates that she finds Ji-Hun and his crew in the past. The fact that this is a simple solution is far from a bad thing, and in fact, it’s refreshing to see the TARDIS utilised within a story to problem solve, especially when, in the Chibnall era, the fact that the Doctor has a time machine is frequently forgotten.
