Doctor Who: Legend Of The Sea Devils Trailer Breakdown - 13 Things You Must See

8. Madame Ching, Pirate Queen

The trailer soon introduces us to Madame Ching, played by Crystal Yu. Or, as the Doctor excitedly calls her, "Madame Ching, Pirate Queen".

Madame Ching was a real pirate leader who lived from 1775 to 1884, and is often remembered as history's most successful female pirate.

Fittingly, a recent synopsis for Legend of the Sea Devils states that Ching is "searching for a lost treasure" when we meet her (this is the lost treasure of the Flor de la Mar, which the Doctor mentions at the end of Eve of the Daleks), so perhaps the Sea Devils are the final obstacle between her and the gold.

The Chibnall era has done a solid job of incorporating historical figures like Mary Seacole and Nikola Tesla into their respective episodes, teaching us a thing or two about their lives whilst weaving them into a crazy alien plot.

Fingers crossed Madame Ching is implemented just as effectively.

Danny has been with WhatCulture for almost nine years, and is currently Doctor Who Editor and WhoCulture Channel Manager, overseeing all of WhatCulture's Whoniverse coverage. He has been writing and video editing for 10+ years, and first got a taste for content creation after making his own Doctor Who trailers and uploading them to YouTube (they're admittedly a bit rusty by today's standards). If you need someone to recite every Doctor Who episode in order or to tell you about the making of 1988's Remembrance of the Daleks, Danny is the person to ask.
