Doctor Who: Ranking Each NuWho Christmas Special

8. Voyage Of The Damned

Doctor Who Christmas Specials
BBC

Though it isn’t often talked about now, Voyage of the Damned was a big deal when it aired in 2007. Attracting viewing figures of 13.31 million on Christmas Day, it was the second most watched TV event of that year, the highest-viewed episode of Doctor Who since City of Death (way back in 1979) and still remains the most watched episode of Nu Who ever.

Starring pop superstar Kylie Minogue as the companion, the Doctor finds himself aboard a futuristic spaceship fashioned as a replica of the HMS Titanic. The ship is hit by an asteroid field which results in severe damage to the ship's hull, conveniently just as it is passing by the Earth.

As the ship plummets towards the planet, The Doctor teams up with waitress Astrid Peth (Minogue) along with several other guests of the ship to try and reach the control deck. However they soon realise the meteor strike was no accident as robotic angels knows as The Host begin trying to kill them. The episode was very well produced, and is amongst the best looking episodes of the RTD era, and it is a perfectly enjoyable ride.

The episode could actually have done with being a few minutes shorter as it begins to wear thin in the middle before picking up again. The climactic death of Astrid works well enough but would have been much more effective with a companion we had been given more time to get to know.
