Doctor Who Review: Flatline - 10 Ways Writer Jamie Mathieson Shines
3. Rejection And Classism
The Doctor fears Clara will choose Danny over him. Danny is afraid he will be left behind. Clara fears they will both reject her true self and so pretends to be whatever she thinks they want her to be. The governing authority rejects the needs of the people of the estate, ignoring the suspicious disappearances of people deemed unworthy of notice. Fenton rejects Rigsys right to protest his treatment as an undervalued citizen. Fenton is also part of the underclass but cannot see beyond the cage he is placed in. Rigsy chooses to take his anger at the system and twist it around until it emerges as something powerful and beautiful. It is his role as an artist to take the negative and use it to build something constructive. Fentons lack of imagination dooms him to a life of brutish cynicism. He learns nothing from his experiences, remaining the same miserable person at the end he was at the beginning.
