5. Nibbler From Futurama
The reason the evil Lord Sutcliffe is interested in the Thames serpent is that its, er, waste produce is actually an incredibly useful source of fuel that is more powerful than coal.
This recalls - of all things - Nibbler from Futurama, Leela's adorable yet super-intelligent diaper-wearing pet. In the animated sci-fi show, Nibbler defecates dark matter, which the Planet Express crew use to fuel their ship.
It could be a total coincidence, but it's such a weird idea that we can't help but think this is a deliberate homage to Matt Groening's series.
