Doctor Who Series 10: Ranking Every Episode From Worst To Best
1. World Enough And Time/The Doctor Falls
"Where there’s tears, there’s hope." - The Doctor/Bill
Taken as a whole the two-part series finale is a delight from start to finish. The Cybermen are finally given a story that focuses on the true horror of what they are. Neither robots from the future nor armoured mutants from another world, behind every Cyberman is someone like you and me. Bill’s conversion is disturbing, frightening and as far as the Doctor is concerned irreversible.
The return of John Simm as the Master was not as prominent as some hoped (with the Master disguised as Razor for most of the first part), but it did add an effective twist to Missy’s redemption story. With Missy caught between becoming like the Doctor and reverting to type, for a while the audience were unsure of which side she would take. It was heart-breaking to see her killed just at the moment when she’d made her choice, but that smile suggested that she knew that her predecessor would shoot her in the back.
Bill is ultimately saved without the Doctor’s intervention. Some will view as a cop out, but when Heather returned as The Pilot it did effectively bring the series full circle. Yes she might able to get home in time for tea but it’s not the fairy tale ending just yet. She will almost certainly be back at Christmas to see the ‘old man’ brought back to life.
Every series finale since the show was relaunched in 2005 has ultimately been about what happens to the Doctor in the end. The question is always the same – how do his adventures, his companions and his enemies change him? This finale offers the bleakest take yet on the Doctor’s state of mind, with even the voices of his friends failing to bring him back to his senses. The series then ends on a cliffhanger - in order to live another day the Doctor must first return to his past.
