Doctor Who Series 12: 10 Huge Questions After Fugitive Of The Judoon
4. Who Was Lee?
Played by the excellent Neil Stuke, Ruth’s husband, Lee
Clayton, turns out (not unexpectedly it has to be said) to be a red herring as
the fugitive. He is the new Doctor’s companion, her protector while her true
identity is hidden in the chameleon arch. The strange thing about Lee is that,
unlike the Doctor, he was not subjected to the chameleon arch. He married Ruth
knowing their identities were a lie, playing a similar role to Martha’s when
the 10th Doctor became John Smith.
The Doctor assumes he and Ruth have bio-shields, but in Ruth’s case the chameleon arch is responsible for her being classified as human by the Judoon. Lee is known by Gat and had the same Gallifreyan training as her. His service medal suggests he was working for the Time Lords for some time, but where this fits in with his partnership with the Doctor is unclear. Did he meet the Doctor on Gallifrey, or was she responsible for getting him there?
He mutters under his breath ‘humans’ when in the café, but he could still be human himself, someone who is all too aware of his species’ limitations after travelling with the Doctor and meeting other civilisations, not least the Time Lords.
