Doctor Who: Space Babies Review - 7 Ups & 3 Downs

2. UP - The Snow Was A Warning

Doctor Who Space Babies

The ending of Space Babies is a corker, and proves that Russell T Davies has been copying Steven Moffat's homework.

But let's go back a bit first, to the flashback to The Church on Ruby Road, where the Doctor's memory of Ruby's mother changes to show her pointing a warning finger at him. What this means for Ruby's arc is not yet clear, but it does inspire the Doctor to set some ground rules.

Ground rules that he'll probably disregard later in the series.

While he's banned Ruby from travelling back in time to meet her mother, the Doctor's curiosity gets the better of him, as he runs a TARDIS scan on his new companion. It felt like a worrying callback to when the Eleventh Doctor began investigating whether Amy had been replaced by her flesh avatar in Series 6.

Ruby's memories and the TARDIS scan had the odd effect of causing it to snow in both the baby farm and the console room. The snow, surmises the Doctor, is a warning not to track down Ruby's mother.

The image of snow falling inside the TARDIS console room was a haunting image to end the episode on, and a portentous tease of things to come.
