Doctor Who: Survivors Of The Flux Review - 6 Ups & 6 Downs

11. UP - Yaz Steps Up Again

Doctor Who Flux
BBC

When Graham and Ryan jumped ship, viewers had one major hope for series 13: Yaz needed a lot more attention that she had gotten. After two whole series with the Doctor, she still felt like a guest star. For reference, this is the same amount of time we got with Rose Tyler. The difference was frankly staggering.

Yaz, whilst being likeable enough, has never been a particularly deep or engaging character, but Flux has really turned her around, and she now feels like a companion in her own right that can contend with the other NuWho heavyweights. This week, she was back in command, leading the charge, saving the boys’ skin on more than one occasion and making just about every important decision there was to be made. Mandip Gill’s charisma is really starting to shine through this time around, with Yaz feeling far more natural, and she’s got some good banter too. We enjoyed her ragging on Dan for his constant mentioning of his Scouse roots. Maybe the show is self-aware after all.

Also, was it just us that detected a slight romantic undertone to the scene with her replaying The Doctor’s message? For a moment, we thought she might directly acknowledge the feelings that Chibs has been seeding for years. We’re interested to see where this goes.
