Doctor Who: The Cartmel Masterplan - What Could Have Been
When it came to the Doctor, Andrew Cartmel and his team wanted him to be more mysterious. They pushed the Doctor into much darker territories, and toyed with the very idea of his existence. Thus, they re-established the 'who' in Doctor Who.
The Seventh Doctor evolved into a master manipulator, standing above his battles like a demi-god, watching over every little detail. Those involved within the adventures became his pawns, and we watched as he cleverly calculated each of his moves in his long game of chess. This is greatly seen in Remembrance of the Daleks, Silver Nemesis, and The Curse of Fenric.
We saw him deliberately pit two factions of Daleks against one another, tempting them with the Hand of Omega, a powerful stellar manipulator, which inevitably brought about their near extinction. A similar thing happened with his battle with the Cybermen, luring in the cybernetic creatures through the means of a misleading game, ultimately bringing about their destruction.
His confrontation with Fenric was perhaps his most cruel. Not only did it showcase his much darker, and calculating new persona, but it also demonstrated his secretive past and god-like presence in the universe. It was literally a battle between Gods and Demons, with the Seventh Doctor carefully pulling the strings to arrange his perfectly strategized checkmate.
