Doctor Who & The Dalek Invasion of Twitter

Whilst Daleks will return in the next series of Doctor Who, we shouldn't forget that they have been busily taking over Twitter.

Since the first trailer for Doctor Who Series 7 emerged and we received virtual confirmation from Steven Moffat that the Daleks would return from their holiday, the internet has been awash with excitement about the Doctor€™s arch-nemesis. We€™ve had Matt Smith and Karen Gillan photographed with their favourite Dalek, the BBC€™s official Doctor Who website has been trailing through the history of the Daleks over the years and Whovians debating which era of Daleks were the best. All of this has ignored the fact that the Daleks never went anywhere. Despite Moffat€™s best efforts to deprive Doctor Who of the Daleks, they still appeared in series 6, albeit briefly, but more importantly, the Daleks have been busily taking over Twitter. And it seems that for once, it is they, rather than the Doctor who is winning this war of words. Dalek Thay (@DalekThay) Remember Dalek Thay? He€™s the Dalek from the Cult of Skaro who played the €œIdentify yourself€ game with the Cybermen during Doomsday. He€™s also the most popular, or most obeyed depending on how you look at it, Dalek on Twitter, with over 17,000 followers. Producing a veritable assault of 140 character one liners, if you do follow one Dalek on Twitter, Dalek Thay is the one to choose. Some of his best tweets include €œThey SAY that SILENCE is GOLDEN. This is INCORRECT. CYBERMEN is GOLDEN. WEREWOLVES is SILVER, and SILENCE? Regular BULLETS work FINE€ and €œDALEK HALLOWEEN TIP: Do NOT accept JELLY BABIES from a MAN living in a BANGED-UP old BOX.€ Hipster Dalek (@HipsterDalek) The irony that one of the most followed Daleks on Twitter is the one who would rather not be setting trend, isn€™t lost on this denizen of Skaro who has set up in Williamsburg. With over 10,000 followers, Hipster Dalek is rather less obscure than most hipsters would like, but then again, with tweets such as €œPULLED A TENTACLE DURING YOGA THIS WEEKEND. THE €˜DOWNWARD DALEK€™ IS HARDER THAN IT LOOKS€ and €œBEING A DALEK ON TWITTER HAS BECOME TOO MAINSTREAM. I€™M GOING BACK TO ICQ€ he can hardly expect otherwise. Republican Dalek (@RepublicanDalek) Without trying to make too overt a political observation, it seems unsurprising that a Dalek would align itself with the Republican Party. If you can€™t inflict global Armageddon by yourself, it makes since to encourage the next most likely group of locals to do it for you. Providing ongoing commentary of the American political process, Republican Dalek€™s explanation of the odd statements from Republican Presidential Nominees is easy, they€™re all Dalek Autons anyway. As a taste of what to expect from this Dalek from the dixie heartland, €œAUTON SANTORUM WILL FIGHT TO THE END TO DENY AUTON ROMNEY EVERY TINY SCRAP OF DIGNITY AND SELF RESPECT OUT OF PURE SPITE. IT PLEASES ME!€ and €œSO WHAT IF WE DEPOPULATED AN ISLAND CHAIN FOR A MILITARY BASE? THEY WERE BARELY USING THOSE ISLANDS€. But be warned, Republican Dalek tweets often, a bit like Fox News.... A Supreme Dalek (@ASupremeDalek) Claiming to be the Supreme Dalek of Steven Moffat€™s New Dalek Paradigm, the Supreme Dalek seems to split his time between leading the New Dalek Paradigm in rebuilding Skaro and running for the 2012 US Presidential election. Though on the latter he appears to have gone missing in media coverage, a fact he often puts down to someone placing a perception filter on his Republican debate appearances. Two of his best tweets are €œFezes are RED, bow-ties are TOO, if you wear either of these, we€™ll EXTERMINATE YOU. #DalekValentines€ and €œSchrödinger's DALEK: You are both SIMULTANEOUSLY INFERIOR and EXTERMINATED by the Daleks€.

Working in public relations, the place where writers and creative people go to die, Gwynn maintains an eclectic mix of interests that range from long-distance running and writing through to Latin dancing and science fiction. As a child he once tried to turn his tricycle into a Dalek using sticky tape and A4 paper. His Dad didn’t appreciate his creative use of all the printer paper as much as Gwynn did.
