Doctor Who: The Fourth Doctor's 15 Greatest Stories

9. Image Of The Fendahl

There are four thousand million people here on your planet and if I'm right, within a year, there will just be one left alive. Just one.
One of the last of the Gothic Horrors for many years, this story is also one of the very best. The Doctor and Leela investigate mysterious deaths in the night and uncover a scientific experiment on an ancient human skull and an evil force that has shaped the planet Earth for millions of years. At its heart is a great mystery. How can a human skull unearthed in Kenya be twelve million years old? The Fendahl has been shaping humanity and it has its sights on poor scientist Thea, whose possession into the gold, goddess-like figure is rather chilling and tragic. Wanda Ventham plays Thea as a likeable, intelligent character worthy of being a companion but the evil in this tale is far too great. There have been many attempts to define evil in Doctor Who but the Fendahl is one of the most interesting and successful personifications of them all.
