Doctor Who: The Halloween Apocalypse Review - 7 Ups & 5 Downs
11. UP - A New Vibe
Straight off the bat, it’s clear that we’re in for a series of Who that is unlike anything that has come before, and we love it.
With a plethora of moving parts and perspective jumps, the narrative structure felt more like an episode of Game of Thrones than Doctor Who. The sole focus was shifted away from the TARDIS team to introduce the various players within the series, taking the unique decision to introduce what felt like all of the series antagonists in one go. The stakes of this series already feel extremely high, and the concept of the Flux, an unstoppable and ever-expanding force of nature that devours planets for breakfast, is unlike anything we’ve seen before.
All of this combined to give the episode a truly cinematic feel akin to Day of the Doctor, that truly wouldn’t have felt out of place at the cinema. It feels like event television, and has us very very excited.
Also, cold open aside, the effects in this episode, both visual and practical, are gorgeous. Thumbs up from us!
