When it was announced that David Tennant would be stepping down as the Tenth Doctor he was leaving some big shoes to fill. Tennant is still considered a fan favourite now over a decade since his departure from the show, and the admiration of the Tenth Doctor was even stronger back during his years in the TARDIS.
However, the relatively unknown Matt Smith - the youngest actor to be cast in the role of the Time Lord - proved more than capable of taking over as the headline act of the long-running sci-fi show. Smith brought to life a more whimsical portrayal of The Doctor, one who could be reckless and impulsive but had a childlike wonder at the universe.
Smith also knew when to play up The Doctor's age and weariness; despite being 26 when he was cast he could get across how ancient the character was. This especially would be shown off in one of the Eleventh Doctor's many monologues, which were delivered brilliantly by Smith.
