Doctor Who: The Main Inspiration Behind Each Doctor's Costume

A return to much brighter garments after the darker shades of Capaldi's clothing, incumbent Time Lord Jodie Whittaker found the inspiration for her costume in a very modern way: a random Google search.

Presenting her ideas to costumer Ray Holman (who she had previously worked with on Broadchurch), Whittaker showed him a black-and-white image she'd found while scanning the internet, one that she felt was "timeless": a woman wearing oversized crop trousers, a t-shirt, suspenders, and boots.

The general look of the Thirteenth Doctor was built from this photo, with Whittaker wanting her costume to "flow" with her movements, and to not feel too restrictive - which makes sense, considering how energetic the Doctor gets sometimes.

Other elements of her outfit were also inspired by women of the past, with Holman noting that the violet shade in the sleeves of her coat was a nod to the violet and green colours of the Suffragettes.

Danny has been with WhatCulture for almost nine years, and is currently Doctor Who Editor and WhoCulture Channel Manager, overseeing all of WhatCulture's Whoniverse coverage. He has been writing and video editing for 10+ years, and first got a taste for content creation after making his own Doctor Who trailers and uploading them to YouTube (they're admittedly a bit rusty by today's standards). If you need someone to recite every Doctor Who episode in order or to tell you about the making of 1988's Remembrance of the Daleks, Danny is the person to ask.
