Doctor Who: The Main Inspiration Behind Each Doctor's Costume

12. The Second Doctor

The Second Doctor's appearance was a little more odd and a lot less clean than the First Doctor's (which explains why he has the nickname "Cosmic Hobo"), while still retaining a similar overall feel.

Two's costume - an oversized coat and trousers with a wonky bow-tie - was born out of a lengthy debate between actor Patrick Troughton, script editor Gerry Davis, and producer Innes Lloyd, who all brought different ideas to the table.

With regards to his iconic hairdo, there's been some debate as to whether or not Troughton, like Hartnell, wore a wig for the role. Some say that he only wore one for his first few stories, but Troughton himself has denied the use of a wig entirely.

On the other hand, Anneke Wills - who starred opposite Troughton as companion Polly - claims that he did wear a wig, and that it actually started out as a curly one, before she herself decided to make it straighter by combing it.

Troughton's response to this? "I like it."

Danny has been with WhatCulture for almost nine years, and is currently Doctor Who Editor and WhoCulture Channel Manager, overseeing all of WhatCulture's Whoniverse coverage. He has been writing and video editing for 10+ years, and first got a taste for content creation after making his own Doctor Who trailers and uploading them to YouTube (they're admittedly a bit rusty by today's standards). If you need someone to recite every Doctor Who episode in order or to tell you about the making of 1988's Remembrance of the Daleks, Danny is the person to ask.
