Doctor Who: The Power Of The Doctor Review - 5 Ups & 7 Downs
8. DOWN - Graham O’Brien’s Wacky Volcano Adventure
And you thought the Cyber-plot was half-baked.
This episode sees the return of the Daleks, and boy is this a weak outing for them. We start off very promising however, with a mysterious message from a "traitor" Dalek. This Dalek infiltrates the TARDIS, you know, the incredibly secure spaceship that is impenetrable (unless you’re a Dalek, Judoon, Kasaavin, Weeping Angel, or Eternal. Other than that, totally safe).
We’re intrigued to see what could've possibly caused this Dalek to grow a conscience, and why the Dalek race is in danger. Unfortunately, neither of these points are ever explained, as before the Dalek gets the chance, he becomes the guest of honour at the Annual Dalek Volcano BBQ and is frazzled to death in his shell. And we’ll never know why.
Later, Ace is dropped off to deal with the Daleks and bumps into none other than Graham O'Brien. At no point is it explained why Bradley Walsh has ended up in the core of a volcano in Bolivia, all by himself, and with absolutely no plan and nothing but his trusty psychic paper. Speaking of plot contrivances - why does Chibnall at no point explain why Vinder just pops out of a wormhole and gets sent back again? Why is there even a wormhole there?
Anyway, the Daleks decide to take a break from their world-ending super plot to grab a cup of tea, leaving just one Dalek on watch. Graham and Ace quickly dispatch this lone sentry and foil the Daleks’ plan. World saved. Happy days.
To say this plot makes no sense is the understatement of the century.
