Doctor Who: The Seventh Doctor's Stories Ranked From Worst To Best
4. The Greatest Show In The Galaxy
No, that's not just a description of Doctor Who itself but also the name of the next story on our list which sees the Doctor take Ace to the universally-renowned Psychic Circus only to find that something sinister is going on (when isn't it?). Set around a once-great show now washed-up and abandoned, it's often seen as a metafictional reflection of Doctor Who's own perilous state at the time (as in this recent article of ours here). Even without reading into it, though, it's a terrific piece in itself with highlights being the Seventh Doctor doing his 'dark Doctor' thing against the Gods of Ragnarok and the chilling Chief Clown who dresses like an Undertaker (something tell us Ace did not get rid of her fear of clowns after this adventure). Full of brilliantly bizarre ideas, Greatest Show is enthused with that pervasive anarchic style of the Seventh Doctor's era and a clash of colour and darkness which was inspired by comics books of the time like the works of Alan Moore and 2000 AD. Contrary to its title, it might not be the greatest show in the Whoniverse but it is one of the best of this daring era of the show. Although, the less said about the Ringmaster's rapping the better. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UvcCgLwunQU
