Doctor Who: Top 10 Moments Of The Fourth Doctor

1. "I'm Only A Humble Curator" (The Day Of The Doctor)

On hearing that voice, only a little diminished in its cavernous depth, Fourth Doctor fans were immediately transported to a very different time, a time when the Doctor was a man with curly hair and a long scarf, where the TARDIS was a white box in a studio and the monsters were made of rubber, not pixels. This is probably the last time Tom Baker will be seen in a major TV production as his signature character and although the scene is the perfect epilogue to the show's 50th anniversary adventure, it also feels like the final word on a remarkable career, spoken by the man himself. All the familiar tics are there - the everlasting 'Ooohhh...', the way he taps his nose, that amused, canny stare - but the mane of hair has turned white and he leans on a cane, yet another prop but one that is as telling as all the others. Not even a former Time Lord is immune to the ravages of time. It's a wonderful sequence, a far better farewell than falling off a radio telescope or being trapped in a time bubble or whatever it was he was doing in Dimensions in Time. For less than five minutes, he reasserts his status as the Doctor. As great as Matt Smith was, up against Tom he seems normal, humdrum. That's why he was chosen, over Davison, Baker or McCoy, as the sole representative of the Classic Series - because no other actor encompasses all the eccentricities and contradictions of Doctor Who quite like he did and, as this scene proves from 2013, still does. I am Scotland's 278,000th best export and a self-proclaimed expert on all things Bond-related. When I'm not expounding on the delights of A View to a Kill, I might be found under a pile of Dr Who DVDs, or reading all the answers in Star Wars Trivial Pursuit. I also prefer to play Playstation games from the years 1997-1999. These are the things I like.
