Doctor Who: War Of The Sontarans Review - 7 Ups & 5 Downs

10. UP - The Crimean War

Doctor Who Flux
BBC

This era continues its trend of choosing interesting and overlooked periods of history by setting its sights on The Crimean War, a bloody and often forgotten conflict in which the Brits, along with the French and the Ottomans, fought against the nation of Russia, which, in this case, has been entirely removed from history and been replaced by Sontar. The setting is well realised, even if it’s just a bunch of fields, and seems a fitting stomping ground for the Sontarans.

Watching an army of redcoats, cannons and all, get decimated by the superior Sontaran forces was a pleasure to watch, especially from a show that doesn’t tend to show large scale battles very often, certainly not in as much detail as we saw here. Flux is making good use of its shiny new budget, and it gets a big up from us.
