Doctor Who: What Happened To Each Doctor After They Left The Show?

Last Regular Episode: The Parting Of The Ways

After helping to reboot Doctor Who for a whole new generation of viewers, Christopher Eccleston stayed for just a single season before regenerating into David Tennant. After leaving, he's been very vocal about the fact that his time on the show wasn't as rewarding as he would've liked, and it's probably for this reason that he's mostly steered clear of genre fare in the 15 years since.

The actor has been extremely selective with his TV work since leaving Doctor Who, mostly sticking to serious dramas. He's appeared in The Leftovers, Blackout, and Heroes, and even played John Lennon in a 2010 TV movie. Like McCoy, he also had a role in a small-screen adaptation of King Lear, which was led by Anthony Hopkins.

The biggest thing he's done in the fantasy and sci-fi realm since leaving Doctor Who was his role as Malekith in Thor: The Dark World, but he's gone on the record stating that he didn't particularly enjoy his time on that production. To be fair, he was given a horribly-written character to play, so we can't really blame him for regretting that move.

He has never returned to play the Doctor, and to be honest, we don't expect him to.

Danny has been with WhatCulture for almost nine years, and is currently Doctor Who Editor and WhoCulture Channel Manager, overseeing all of WhatCulture's Whoniverse coverage. He has been writing and video editing for 10+ years, and first got a taste for content creation after making his own Doctor Who trailers and uploading them to YouTube (they're admittedly a bit rusty by today's standards). If you need someone to recite every Doctor Who episode in order or to tell you about the making of 1988's Remembrance of the Daleks, Danny is the person to ask.
