Throughout the history of the show, Mary's love life has been a major plot point. From the death of Kemal Pamuk in her bed to her on/off relationship with her eventual husband Matthew Crawley, there has always been a focus on her as the central sister. Matthew's death has left her a young widow with a newborn baby, though by the start of Series 4 the child was already six months old. Of course, as convincingly displayed by actress Michelle Dockery, she has struggled with her grief. As time passes she may begin to love again and as she does the mood of the show may once again begin to shift. Her previous romantic liaison with Kemal Pamuk shows that she has a daring streak and perhaps her next lover will be someone new - a surprise. After all, Lady Sybil married a chauffeur and Lady Edith is currently in love with a man who is both her elder and also from the point of view of her family, unsuitable for her. Perhaps it will be Mary's turn to make such a daring decision.
