Emmys 2017 Nominations: 15 Major Shocks & Snubs
10. Shock: The Alienist (Limited Series)
The Alienist was an underrated gem when it aired in the U.S, and has since picked up a bit of a fanbase since landing on Netflix Worldwide. Never in a million years did fans think it would be recognised by the Academy, and yet it ended up receiving a nomination for Limited Series or Movie.
The mini-series has one of the most unique tones on television. It's set in the 1890s, and centres on the murder of a young boy, who is found disembowelled and on the Williamsburg bridge. Local alienist Laszlo Kreizler (Daniel Brühl) attempts to get to the bottom of what really happened, which leads to some interesting plot twists.
The Alienist isn't the type of show that the Academy usually goes for, so hopefully this is a step in the right direction. It would've been nice had some of its cast members picked up awards too, but we'll take this as a victory nonetheless.
