Emmys 2018: Who Should Win Every Award (And Who Actually Will)

16. Supporting Actress In A Drama Series

Stranger Things 2 Ending Eleven
Netflix

Nominees: Lena Headey, Game of Thrones; Millie Bobby Brown, Stranger Things; Vanessa Kirby, The Crown; Ann Dowd, The Handmaid’s Tale; Yvonne Strahovski, The Handmaid’s Tale; Alexis Bledel, The Handmaid’s Tale; Thandie Newton, Westworld

Should Win: Lena Headey

This is one hell of a category, with everyone listed having an extremely strong case for winning, but the two best are actresses who play complex women who make us understand and even empathise with their terrible deeds. Yvonne Strahovski did that brilliant in The Handmaid's Tale Season 2, but even better was Headey in Game of Thrones' seventh year. She's now the best, most consistent performer on that show, capable of conveying so much hate and spite with a single look, or masking her emotions completely, and yet never losing the loss the character has suffered either.

Will Win: Ann Dowd or Yvonne Strahovski

The Handmaid's Tale is at risk of splitting voters three ways, but with a trio of contenders it's hard to imagine it won't walk away with the award. Alexis Bledel feels like the longest shot, and Dowd has perhaps the best chance given she won last year, but the increased focus on Serena Joy means Strahovski is the most deserving of them.
