Emmys 2022: 5 Ups & 7 Downs
1. The Variety Sketch Series Category (Probably) Needs To Go
One of the most low-key surreal moments of the night was Saturday Night Live's win for Outstanding Variety Sketch Series, given that it was one of only two nominees in the category - the other being A Black Lady Sketch Show, which many felt was a far more deserving winner.
This is the third year in a row where the Variety Sketch category has had three nominees or less, and in each of those three years SNL has triumphed over either A Black Lady Sketch Show or Drunk History.
It doesn't exactly suggest there's enough active competition or "need" for an award recognising variety sketch shows, and given that SNL has won the award six out of the eight years that it's existed, it ultimately just feels like a foregone consolation prize for the series.
Considering that the Primetime Emmys are arguably already bloated with 25 awards to dole out, would anyone outside of actual SNL comedians actually miss this award if it were gone? In the very least, institute a rule where there needs to be four or more nominees for the gong to be given out.
But the night certainly wasn't a total wash, and so here's what actually went down a storm...
