Emmys 2022: 5 Ups & 7 Downs

2. Too Many Repeat Winners

The primary reason that so many great shows failed to garner wins this year? Emmy voters largely stuck to their faves and failed to vote in adventurous or interesting ways.

Ted Lasso and Succession scored the top comedic and dramatic honours of the night despite having both won before, while on the acting side there were repeat victories for Zendaya (Euphoria), Julia Garner (Ozark), Jason Sudeikis (Ted Lasso), Brett Goldstein (Ted Lasso), and Jean Smart (Hacks).

It's always nice to see awards shows spread the wealth across a wide diaspora, and while it's also fair to argue that the best nominees should simply win, are there really ultra-persuasive cases to be made that Ted Lasso outdid Barry or Atlanta, or that Succession was decisively better than Better Call Saul or Severance?

It's all opinion at the end of the day, but it's tough not to view the majority of the night's winners as unimaginative if not outright lazy on the part of voters, enough to make you wonder how many of the nominees they even actually bothered to watch.
