2. The Crown (Season 1)

House Of Cards Stranger Things Daredevil
Alex Bailey/Netflix

Far from a stodgy, austere drama about the early life of Queen Elizabeth II, The Crown is an intoxicating blend of gorgeous production, magnificent performances and history lesson, and tremendously compelling regardless of your own interest in the Royals (though a little definitely helps).

First and foremost, Claire Foy is astonishingly good as Elizabeth, but the cast entire is an embarrassment of riches, most memorably Matt Smith as Prince Phillip and John Lithgow, who is surprisingly excellent as Winston Churchill.

At once humanising the Royals but not stinking of a puff-piece, The Crown is lusciously cinematic storytelling, though given that it comes from the pen of Peter Morgan (The Queen, Frost/Nixon), this shouldn't be too surprising.
