Every Breaking Bad Easter Egg In The Walking Dead

2. The Ringtone

The Walking Dead has gone quite a few years without referencing Breaking Bad, suggesting its days of Heisenberg and blue meth Easter eggs were over. But in yet another example of Angela Kang and Season 9 taking the show back to its roots, the latest episode of the show, titled Omega, dropped a reference to Breaking Bad.

The episode focused on two of its big new characters: the new villain, Alpha, and her daughter, Lydia, who has been taken as a hostage by Hilltop. While there, she begins to open up about her past, and we flashback to a time before the outbreak, and before her mother was the murderous leader of a group who cover themselves in zombie skins.

As we see a number of their interactions from happier times, we find that Alpha used to sing a lullaby to her daughter. The song in question was Lydia the Tattooed Lady, which was written in 1939 and is most commonly associated with the Marx brothers after appearing in At The Circus. In recent years, however, its most prominent use in pop culture was in Breaking Bad.

In the Season 5 finale, after Todd has been killed, he gets a call from his boss/lover Lydia Rodarte-Quayle. His ringtone? Lydia the Tattooed Lady. It's not Breaking Bad's song, but for fans of the show it's very closely associated with it, and just the latest in an increasingly long line of connections between the two shows.
