Every Buffy The Vampire Slayer Season Finale Ranked From Worst To Best
8. Primeval (Season 4, Episode 21)
This one is bending the rules slightly, but 'Primeval' is technically part one of the finale, so it's being included.
Having the distinction of being the only episode in which a Big Bad is defeated prior to the final episode, 'Primeval' is an interesting footnote in the show's history. Centering on The Scooby Gang's last-ditch attempt to defeat the cyber-demon Adam before he can raise an army built in his image, this episode tried its best to go back to basics, and for the most part, it works wonders.
It's certainly not everyone's cup-of-tea, but there's plenty of the good stuff on display and it was a valiant attempt at rounding off season four's meandering plot with some much-needed fireworks. It does its best to cram in as much character work and explosive action as possible in order to make up for the lost time.
A commendable effort for sure, but one that could have been so much more.
In a world where The Initiative storyline was better handled and the events of this episode were better seeded, 'Primeval' would no doubt be considered one of the show's finest hours, but sadly it remains an often-overlooked gem that had all the odds working against it.
