Every Chernobyl Episode Ranked From Worst To Best
4. Episode 2 - Please Remain Calm
As with The Happiness Of All Mankind, Please Remain Calm is unlucky to be so low here. Honestly, in most other TV shows, any of the episodes would be easily the best in their history. It isn’t the best-rated TV show in IMDb history for nothing, after all.
Please Remain Calm deals with the fallout in the most immediate sense of the word. Legasov and Stellan Skarsgard's Boris Shcherbina arrive at Chernobyl and Khomyuk begin uncovering the truth. The scale of the devastation is not yet known, but you can feel it creeping up with every new discover Legasov makes about the disaster.
Though the miniseries is only five episodes long, Skarsgard does some amazing character work. There wasn’t even room in THOAM to talk about his brilliant phone breaking scene when he finally realises the flaws of the Soviet Union’s propaganda machine.
Here though, he’s a company man through and through. His every gesture or movement is the Soviet Union. Through him, we don’t need to know the history, or the politics, or the cultural climate. We know Boris, and that’s enough.
His ‘You will do it because it needs to be done’ encapsulates the entire show in a single line.
