10. Episode 02 - Sportin Waves
The second episode lays the groundwork for the conflicting minds of Earn and Alfred.
Earn is supposed to be the business side of their partnership, but it's he who comes unprepared and blunders a pitch meeting at a streaming provider. Later on he shows his financial naivete as he gives $4000 in cash away to a recently released parole with a vague promise that he would get double his money back in gift cards, only to be worse off when the scam is caught out early.
Alfred's venture with Darius to find a new weed dealer has similar issues - with new potential dealers either being clingy white hipsters or opportunistic faux-fans. While it may not have everlasting consequences, we are shown the frustration on Al's face as he realizes his fame might be a permanent hindrance on his personal vices.
Earn's story in this episode highlights not only how bad he might be with money, but how unprepared he is for the hustle of the industry and the world he's willingly walking into. He may have gone to Princeton, but he's not street-smart and he's not in tune with the music business world. And Alfred is starting to see this.
