Every HBO Comedy Ranked From Worst To Best
49. The Baby-Sitters Club
This is a true HBO outlier - instead of a cynical comedy about showbiz or a riveting, bloody crime drama, we have a teenage comedy about some girls forming the titular childminding organisation. This is hardly a show we could recommend an adult reader suddenly gets heavily into, but for younger viewers or those who were there at the time and fancy a nostalgia trip, The Baby-Sitters Club is a fine proposition.
Its key strength is its casting, with the lead girls getting across a genuine and natural camaraderie rarely seen in actors of any age bracket, let alone young kids. This is a low risk proposition with little in the way of peril - most episodes centre around schoolyard crushes or petty theft.
As an adaptation of a beloved book series, though, it does a bang up job, and is commendable in its refusal to speak down to its young viewers. Not necessarily your next box set recommendation, but for what it was, it’s worthy of mild praise.
